Multicultural mentors
The primary objective for Multicultural Mentors is to develop an opportunity for cultural exchange and expression for English Language Learners (ELLs) at the elementary and secondary levels. Using literature as a performance medium to inspire and develop students’ cultural voices, the program allows high school students to serve as cultural guides and mentors to younger students.
The text chosen will portray themes of cultural expression, and students will write personal narrative inspired by these themes. Students will be coached in the areas of articulation, diction, projection, and oral storytelling to support their performance abilities, and foster English language development.
During the project, students will have the opportunity to engage in both choral and individual vocal performance. Both the initial reading and culminating performance are taped for assessment and reflection.
The project will also enrich social, emotional and cultural development through the form of mentoring partnerships, and collaborative learning experiences, which are significant components of the English as a Second Language curriculum at both the elementary and secondary levels.
